Welcome to the fray TGI. You'll be happy to know you aren't the only sicko running around loose here. Good luck with the '58!

The former owner also had rebuilt the engine - when i got it, it had ~ 350 hrs on it in the 3 years since rebuild, but they rebuilt it still @ the 150 hp! I woulda done the 160 hp upgrade, little more power but better fuel consumption. I put a Power Flow Exhaust on it, and that gave me better climb out especially on the hot days, and a bit better fuel use.

Don't think I'd go for a 180 hp conversion. Little speed gain, mainly weight upgrade, but would need the larger tanks because of more fuel burned. As it is, I can bring along 650 lbs WITH full fuel tanks!

I agree with your assessment. The 160 does gain quite a bit of climb and I was able to 'measure' (ha ha) 2 mph gain at the top end. This fits the math. The surprise, for me, was the reduction in gph. I have to say that we changed the carb at almost the same time......so ?

Care to elaborate on the Power Flow results? I'm keenly interested, but my current exhaust system is in good shape and I have some reservations about the PF, hearing mixed results and being thrifty by nature.
Thanx, no hijack intended!

Welcome to the Club Bg2Pres. Any chance you can make it to San Marcos this Friday-Saturday for our Texas Fly-In? A fun time even if you have to drive up. Best of luck sourcing your new wings!

Well hello from Austin, Texas. I'm Shane, a low time ASEL pilot and owner of a custom aviation shop, doing my best to be involved in all things aviation.

I saw a post on the Red Forums about the little fly-in to the Skyport here in my neck of the woods. I'm based at HYI, and would love to join all of you this weekend if you don't mind the company.

I look forward to meeting some of you, and being a part of your online community.

Thanks!

Yes, I read that the 160 upgrade gets you about a 17% efficiency gain in fuel consumption. The Power Flow got me about a gallon less per hour, at the same time I got the Challenger Air Filter, the cowling fairing, and my prop overhauled ( went to have it balanced, but ended up the whole works! They slightly re-pitched it too.) I really noticed the climb performance bump too. But yeah, not really any speed gain, maybe a couple mph...

My original Cessna exhaust was okay as well, but I found out the standard Cessna exhaust robs between 15 and 20 hp!

I also got the full size PF exhaust, the short stack gives a little less boost. I was like " why do that? "

Hi everyone, been lurking for a few months and I figured I should finally make a post. Still just a student, but all my lessons have been in rental 172's. Hopefully I'll be taking my oral and practical tests in about a month. Casually looking at getting a 172 of my own right now, I probably won't get too serious until after I have a license and can take up the family to see how much they enjoy it!

hello all I'm really considering getting my privet license I've been up in a c172 back home in Michigan on sight seeing tours of the lake shore and even got to fly it for 20mins. needless to say I've had the itch to fly since then and I was 13 or 14 at the time. I've been doing a lot of reading on here and other websites and have more questions than answers at this point. hence I pulled the trigger and registered here. I look forward to learning from all of your experience's and getting a better handle on what I should be looking at for the mission I have in mind.

thank you in advance
Marc

Welcome to the Club Mark! Maybe you'll be able to attend our National Fly-In this June at Strother Field in Winfield Kansas?

Hi Guys
I'm an airline pilot with 25,000 hours and came from a general aviation background. Four years ago I took my two boys to an airshow and shortly afterward they convinced me to get my CFI reinstated and buy an airplane to train them in. I found a very nice, low time 1956 172. They moved off to college (without ever learning to fly) and my wife and I and our chocolate lab fly the 172. I have a job I love but it doesn't compare to flying my little 172. It always draws a crowd on the ramp.
Glad I found this forum. There seems to be lots of nice people and good information. Thanks for making it available.
Mitch

Hi,

I'm flying around the world (in my Ravin 500, not a 172!), currently in San Marcos Texas (go myself 140 USG at one bucks per gallon the other day...). Started in Cape Town, South Africa, about 3 months ago - will be flying around South America and then South Pacific to NZ/Oz. Expect to be back in Cape Town end of Feb-14 (see "Calle Hedberg, Cape Town" on Facebook for details).

Met a bunch of 172 hooligans on the ramp this morning, so decided to sign up to see what they are up to :-)

Regards
Calle

Howdy, Calle!

I actually met you yesterday, but I'm part of this group too. I was the second guy from this group that talked to you. I think Don talked to you first a few minutes before I came by when you were fixing your wing tip lights.

Thanks for telling me all your plans. You've come a long way, but still have an exciting journey ahead, provided you don't decide to stay in some Caribbean island. smile

It's hard to believe your plane has a 2600 nm range just with the wing tanks. I wish I could accompany you on at least part of your ride.

Did you figure out if they had appropriate mogas on Easter Island? That's some crossing Chile direct Easter Island.

I'll be following the rest of your trip on facebook.

Regards,
Henry

Hi,

Well, they definitely don't have avgas, only "93 octane mogas" - but I'm trying to get clarification on (a) what type of octane rating this is (AKI a la US or RON a la Europe), and (b) if the mogas contains any ethanol.

Regards
Calle
