Hey out there. Haven't been on for a couple years and thats how long my plane has been sitting in the mechanics hangar. I have a 65 172 f with an Avcon conversion that I purchased in Alaska in 85. The voltage reg went out on me and it was an automotive regulator(Alaska MOD) so they have no idea what to put back in as I did not get the original paperwork with the plane. Any ideas
Thanks

By Avcon conversion, do you mean a conversion to an O360 180 HP engine and constant speed prop? Avcon should be able to replicate the paperwork if you need it.

My suggestion would be to find a good mechanic. If your engine hasn't been run in two years you may have some issues. Otherwise charge the battery, change the oil and filter, get a ferry permit, and fly the plane to where the good mechanic is. With care your battery should be able to power a radio for long enough to make the flight. Bring a portable radio along as a backup.

Have the good mechanic go over the plane and the paperwork looking for any additional Alaska mods, and also checking things like that the ADs have actually been complied with. He'll need to do that anyways for an annual. With luck you won't find any more surprises. With less luck this could be the start of something very expensive requiring a DER.

As to what voltage regulator to use, several places sell the Zeftronics R15V00 for under $200. The aircraft supported include just about any 172 with a 12 volt alternator. I don't have experience with this part but it looks suitable.

Why is it sitting?

I think a ''f'' has a generator.

If you do get a ferry permit note that a A&P must sign aircraft off for flight.

I have the Zeftronics on my 172 and it has been going for about 10 yrs.

There are two for the alt. One has the high voltage sensor and one without. They also have one with high voltage protection and one without.

If you have the high voltage protection on your plane you can just put on one with out. But working with your AP you can determine which will be best on the generator, as my experience is only alternator.

I suspect that if it was updated to an O360 the generator was replaced with an alternator. The voltage regulator should work with either.

I am having trouble figuring out what voltage regulator to run on my 65 172 avcon conversion. I have no paperwork on the conversion and my mechanics can't figure it out because somewhere back in 88 or so I had put an automotive reg on it and it was fine for 20 or so years and now that is not working they can't figure out what to put back on it because of the conversion. They have had the plane for more than 2 years

Look at page 46. Look up the numbers for the amp rating of you alt and see if it looks correct.

Sorry about that last post. I hadn't realised I had gotten any replys to my problem. My mechanics have been anualing and taking care of all ad's for 9 years or so but are stuck on this Voltage regulator issue because it is an avcon conversion. I have the 180
A1A Lycoming in the plane. Does the actual STC paperwork specify a particular Regulator?? Should they do a 337 because we do not have the paperwork on the conversion?

Not sure of what the regs say but I would think just a log book entry if it's a PMA part. The regulator is dependent to what the alternator is, not what the engine is.

I'm amazed that your A&P/IA doesn't have an answer to this.

You could call Zeftronics and ask them - 903-758-6661.

Does anyone have the actual paperwork STC on the Avcon conversion to see if it designates a particular Volt Reg. I believe this is what the mechanic is hung up on.

I don't have the AVCON in mine, but we used a Plane Power solid state regulator and plane power alternator. The STC on my plane was done by the installer, Sheridan Flying Service when it was used as a jump plane. 1 time STC for the 0-360 A1A and C/S Prop. I don't believe voltaglators are specific to engine conversions, not sure why your mechanic would be hung up on that.

My WAG is his concern is just WHO authorizes the Reg.

Obviously not Cessna as that was a gen.

The switch to an alternator was likely per STC for Avcon conversion.

Techs MUST use "Approved Data" for installations.

I think talking to the Zeftronics folks is the route to go.

Their PMA/etc likely covers this.

I just installed the Av-con 0-360 STC. Nothing specific about the regulator. I purchased one though plane power that goes with the light weight alternator.
