I'm waiting for the STC for this C150 retrofit.

Should give a kick!

There was someone working on a Honda motor install for a 150. I don't know whatever became of it but I do know 1st hand that the Honda motor made a 150 perform like none other!

This one seems quite interesting to me ! Quality engineering and performance ...

Honda has a 275 HP V6 it uses in the Ridgeline vehicles, matter of fact it is built about 10 miles from where I currently am at!

Google "Vesta Propellors" and check out the site!

Ok You have my attention.

1) I drive a corvette with the same engine.
a) The engine has been bulled proof for 90000 miles of street
track driving. Red lined many times.

2) The last engine that "almost" (to my memory) pass the FAA
certification was the Cadillac Northstar engine. If failed about
90+ hrs of full throttle operation by piston melt down. Builder
of the engine stated with oil piston cooling as aircraft it would
pass. To my knowledge it never did so it is not a certified engine

3) I would hope the Corvette engine is better with engineering than
a 20 yr old design Caddy engine.

4) Apparently the corvette does not get oil injection as the site
claims straight out of the box installation

5) All the +'s are great but there are negatives

6) Weight? Does the firewall & nose gear get reinforced for extra
weight. Ok not a lot of extra weight but it is there?

7) Will the engine be certified or just for EAA use? My guess is EAA.

8) Will the airframe/ speed / structure safely take the extra powere
and would this change the FAA certification?

9) If all this weree correct I would definitely consider one but I
would need to know all the answers prior to putting $$ down.

Summary looks great and all the +'s would be a fantastic selling factor.

It seems that every time they try to use a car engine in an aircraft it doesn't seem to work out.
There was the Porsche Mooney and I think some Ultralights have a Subaru but a real replacement for Lyc or Conti doesn't seem to be here yet.
I think they tried a Wankel engine as well.
Rotax and Franklins are purpose built.

I can't figure out why.Temperature? Stresses?Cooling issues? Any ideas?

In my misspent youth my brother had a dirt track race team, one thing I remember (other then flying dirt and mud) that street legal cars driving down the road only tac out at around 1500-2000 RPM,Nascar race engines tac out on the front and back streight away 7000-8000 RPMS but they are so souped up when they are at idle you can hear each cylinder fire. I think the problem is people are trying to adapt production engines (1500-2000 rpms) to run at 7000-8000 rpms. smile

Actually the corvette engine could run at 5000 rpm and using a reduction assembly turn a really big prop. If you noticed the video the prop was a 3 blade paddle prop. Lots of climb power. The real question are will the engine hold to gether operating at those rpm's when it normally operates around 2000 to 3000 rpm. To turn at 5000 and run the reductiong gear box to get the prop tip speeds down to a functional level would require a BIG prop,, and long nose wheel strut to prevent prop strike OR 3 or 4 blade prop. Piston melt down is still an issue.

One extra question also.

Corvette is water cooled, where is the radiator and how is

thermal shock prevented?

The V8 installation is water cooled and there is no thermal shock with a water cooled engine, the radiator(s) are mounted under the cowling.

Check out Bud Warner's site http://www.geareddrives.com/ and look at his product.

I knew those drives were available,, perhaps not that specific one. The reduction gearbox is how the prop speeds are lowered and torque increased to turn large props slow. but it does add weight.

I don't remember seeing in the vid where the radiator went to cool the corvette engine.

Cooling/overheating/thermal shock are issues I would be concerned in this reapplication of the corvette to 172. However my corvette does great driving to the airport to fly my 172. smile

It sounds promising but the retrofit is $45 K which takes it out of my league.
Seems a lot for a car engine but they are talking about 3000Hrs TBO and a $6K new engine replacement once it's been done the first time and 5.5 Gal/Hr mogas.
Let's see.

I do understand the water cool has a thermostat and hopefully thermal shock is not a problem. I just would not want to find out it is a problem during a winter IMC desent on approach.

I would like to see some test data on it. However I might consider one give the advantages. Buy a 172 with high time engine needing replacement at lower price then do the upgrade.?

If you look at Vesta's website you can see a radiator mounted beside the engine on one of their pictures and on the units I have seen at various shows there are cowl slats/doors that control the airflow. I saw Bud Warner's (www.geareddrive.com) Wheeler Express at the South West Regional Fly In several years ago in Hondo and he was running two radiators, one on each side, with airflow controls. Bud did have a video out that showed that very plane climbing at 6,000 + feet per minute running his drive and a GM V8 engine.

Exactly what I was thinking. New engine (versus a rebuid or re-built) is gonna run you $30K or better. With this, besides being able to fill it at the local gas station, your next one in 3,000 hours is only going to be $6K. Cheaper running, insane performance and lower costs at overhaul...got my interest peaked. Besides, think of the whizbang factor - the look on the faces of all those Cirrus and Beech owners when they dislocate their necks trying to follow you on take off! grin

And - no more worrying about the outcome of the 100LL debate.

As with lots of things in aviaition, there are "trade offs" always to consider. Personally I would not be opposed to a water cooled automotive type V8 engine but I think I would prefer putting it in a different airframe instead of the 172. Maybe a Cessna 180 or 185, a Stinson Station Wagon or a Bearhawk would be a more suitable airframe, and I am sure there are many other airframe preferences people would suggest.

If it all goes according to their blurb, it makes an appealing alternative. The pros that I can see are;

More than enough power
5.5 GPH claimed running on MOGAS at nearly half the price of 100LL (An equivalent of 3GPH?!)
3000hr TBO with a $6k replacement
Quiet
No shock cooling issues
Full certified STC for the 172

The cons?
$45,000

However as Vettdvr says, buy a cheap 172 with a run out engine. I think it's a viable option to consider. To me it makes more sense than the diesel 182 conversion I've seen at $85,000. The Paramus flying club (who we bought our 172 from) have a diesel 182 here http://www.flyingclub.org/68n.html

The STC versions cost is a MAJOR consideration, and I wish them lots of success with their efforts as the more units are sold, perhaps it may make it more affordable. However, I suppose a person could go the experimental route and build one themselves utilizing one of the drives/parts being currently offered by various persons (Vesta, Geared Drives, Etc).
