Hello everybody, I am Bill and live near Grand Forks, ND. When I was very young, my grandpa brought me to the Crystal (MN) airport open house and I got to fly around in an airplane. I felt like the king of the world sitting in the front seat. Since then, I have always wanted to get my PPL, but always assumed the whole pilot game was out of my reach financially.

Some recent research has proven otherwise, and now I'm working on saving up enough to get started with flying lessons. I intend to start the lessons in the next year or two, and until that point I will be soaking up whatever info I can and asking questions. I found this site while researching the 172 and thought I would join up. Thanks for letting me in and I'm looking forward to learning all I can about flying!

Hey Bill that's a great idea. You will not regret getting your license. just the sense of accomplishment will be something you will always carry. I got my license 34 years ago and finally bought a plane 6 years ago. I don't regret a thing.

Welcome, Shawn! Glad to have you with us. At 37, that is a great tine to get started. The experiences that you have while working on your Private Pilot License will stick with you the rest of your life.

I started in 1983 flying Tomahawks at Peninsula Aviation, Torrance Municipal Airport. Those were fun times. Where will you be flying out of? Keep us posted on your progress.

I've been looking at schools but I'm leaning toward Pacific Air Flight School out of Long Beach. Any thoughts? I'd like a good school and so far it seems Long Beach and El Monte seem pretty good.

We moved to Florida in 1984 so I am unable to give you any feedback on the current Flight Schools at either El Monte or Long Beach. I might suggest that you visit both airports and the Flight Schools there. Tell them that you are considering taking some flying lessons and ask them to show you one of their training aircraft.

This will give you an opportunity to see just how friendly and helpful the Flight School personnel are or are not. When you look at the aircraft check to see if the airplanes are clean and attractive or are beat up and dirty. I preferred flying newer better maintained airplanes than tired old dogs when I was renting. A well maintained airplane where everything works properly helps with the learning process.

Another consideration is how close and convenient each airport is to where you live. When I started my lessons I lived in Torrance. I preferred low wing airplanes (yes, and I have owned a 172M for 14 years now) and I had seen these white, low wing airplanes with T-tails while driving past the airport. They had caught my eye.

I stopped by Peninsula Aviation and asked if I could look at their trainers. They said sure and they let me go look at their airplanes. Of course, this was back in an era when you could still walk around airports without security escorts. I went back in and bought the Operating Handbook for the Piper Tomahawk. I read it cover to cover and then went back and scheduled my first flying lesson. I had a wonderful time and was hooked.

Peninsula Aviation was an active Flight School in those days. They had five full time Flight Instructors and a Designated Examiner on staff as well. The staff was friendly and helpful too. They were a good fit for me. The Tomahawks were 4 to 5 years old and still looked like new. My cross country ship had just received it's first new engine and it performed nicely. I have nothing but fond memories af my experiences there. Sadly, they are all long gone now.

You need to find your own Peninsula Aviation. I hope this helps you in some small way. Please keep us posted on your progress!

Brian

Hi Everyone,
I'm a new member, new pilot, and new airplane owner. Wanted to be a recreational pilot for 20 years, finally had the epiphany in September to just do it already. By October I soloed and in Feb I got my private. Bought a beautiful 1961 172B a couple weeks ago and I'm loving it. If anyone else is in Louisiana / Mississippi / Alabama, please let me know if any fly-ins or social activities!!

Hello,

I am Oliver, living in Novi, Michigan. My wife and I are originally from Germany, but moved permanently to the US at the end of 2013.
Our flying careers began with paragliders, then powered paragliders and trikes, before we finally got our private pilot’s licenses in St. Augustine, Florida. From then on, we spend most of our vacations in the US, flying. If you are interested – our flying videos in YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPOy9c1fLCSWhBwkCKqORJO_BgnhTKpsi

Even though we are happy members of a flying club, we have the desire to have an own plane and a shorter drive to the airport for the quick evening flights.
After some reasoning abut want we want and what fits our mission, especially since we are planning to stay in the flying club, we decided to look for a nice straight tail 172. This is also why I signed up to this forum, to learn and to possibly find a plane. 

Regards,

Oliver

Hey guys, I am new to the forum and I joined a few weeks ago when I intended on purchasing my own 172. I have since searched for the right 172 and found my 1971 172L. Looking to start flying it sometime next week if weather permits.

Hello, my name is Paul, I'm from the northeast and just got my first airplane, it's a 172L, I've been searching for one for quite a while so I'm happy to have finally found a nice one that I could afford.

Great choice for a first airplane, maybe for a last airplane too! Welcome, Paul. Enjoy the club!
