I've moved a couple according to the Penn Yan STC. The later model 172N's have a battery shelf instead of a box which I prefer. The shelf is rebuilt with a new base and shifted outboard by 1" on the existing mounts. Instructions are all in the Penn Yan STC. I've seen a similar mount on a Deltahawk, but have not see their instructions? Don

I didn't know you could use a shelf with exposed terminals due to a fire risk?

Well spotted, the picture was taken at annual to show the missing terminal cover. This is how Cessna mount the batteries form about 1980 on.

And the battery vent is not needed with a sealed battery. Concord put a sealed spigot on it to 'store' the vent pipe in case you ever want to go back. I think thats a RG24M, probably the most expensive 24V battery you can buy but I've had excellent experience with them. I think the previous one lasted 8 years. Don

Has any moved the battery box off the firewall to the compartment behind luggage area?

I am interested in this question as well. I carry extra weight in my baggage area for CG management, and it would make more sense to me to move the battery to just behind the baggage compartment.

I am also interested in this issue. I have a 1978 172N with an Airplains 180HP conversion.
The CG when the front seats are both occupied is at the forward limit. This makes the plane harder to flair smoothly. I carry a case of oil in the hat shelf to help and she flairs better but is excess weight. Having the battery relocated would help but I have not checked what it would do to the W&B if four adults are present. I believe relocating the battery would help but then battery venting would factor in.

No reason it should.

The original 150's had the battery behind the aft baggage wall. Vent tube simply ran out the box and down out the bottom of the fuse.

And add 20 kilograms of copper to get the heavy wire needed to the starter, what wire gage would be sufficient? Does sound terrible idea.

Does mounting the battery on a tray need a STC and mandatory fully sealed battery? I cannot imagine the mess and repair if a standard battery blows not within the box - battery acid flying around under the cowling, ouch.

Extra cabling is a factor. Additionally, what about the chance of it becoming a projectile during a crash/forced landing? Iím always wary of dense objects behind me in fast-moving vehicles.

Would it be possible to duplicate what Cessna produced in the 175 and the get a field approval (form 337). All the part numbers are in the Model 172 & 175 Series Parts Catalog (1956 thru 1962) and the 100 series Service Manual. You should even be able to get a copy of the weight and balance forms for the 175 for the CG info.
