Anyone looked into upgrading the Cessna DG with a used HSI? I'm thinking I'd like to do that, if I can get a used HSI at the right price. I suppose I've got to get one that's yellow-tagged, too.

Sorry Slips,
Can't quite get the question.
You mean put a digital unit instead of the DG.?
Quite a few people have done this.See HawkXP for example.

(OK you can put the gun down. I'm unarmed.)

No, just pulling my heading indicator (aka DG) and replacing it with an analog HSI like the King KI-525A rather than something like the digital Sandel EHSI. Just wondering how involved it is.

Good question. Watching for the same info.

I think you would have to fit the complete system and not just the indicator in the case of the King HSI as it is only an indicator from the main gyro system.
It would be a nice mod but I think quite expensive.
Wonder if anyone's done it to a 172?

The digital ones seem to be easier to retro-fit but the ones I've seen fitted still retain the clockwork DG as well so guess they don't have a full STC?

Depends on the HSI. If it's slaved with a remote compass, it's more difficult, though not impossible. A non-slaved NSD-360 is relatively easy to install. Replace the DG, hook the nav receiver outputs to the HSI and it's done. Probably 15-20 hours shop time. Use the drop in Aspen PFD and it's about $11,000 total. For the Aspen, you have to retain the ASI, AI and altimeter for certification. If you autopilot is driven off the turn coordinator, that has to be retained as well.

The only advantage I'd see would be if it WERE slaved to a remote compass so you'd not have to keep adjusting for precession. I have flown G1000 182s quite a bit, so do like the HSI presentation with slaved compass, but not enough to invest what it would take to put an HSI in my Skyhawk. Now that we have a GNS 430W and GPSS connected to our autopilot, we've found the need for an HSI to be insignificant since we now use the A/P to track a gps course most of the time instead of a heading bug on a precessing DG.

Love HSI and they are around 12,000 for the good one. Makes approaches easier.Get a trade a plane and look at the ads.

I agree,, every C130 I flew had HSI and all jets I flew had them. But then the taxpayers were paying for the fuel.

The moving parts would keep me from going with a mechanical HSI. I'd invest in an Aspen with no moving parts if I were to move in that direction.

The only thing enslaved in my airplane is the autopilot that occupies the left front seat. I like it that way. I learned to fly so that I could fly, not some machine.

Now, granted, autopilots are great for long, butt-numbing legs, and the newer ones make better landings than most airline pilots, but my legs are seldom more than 2-2 1/2 hours long, and, damn it, I just ENJOY it. If I didn't, I'd take the bus.

HSI's are great 'combo' instruments that integrate different displays in a single unit. That alone would make them desireable. Electronic gadgets are nice, but expensive. And, if electronic devices are so 'hot-damn' good, how come you still gotta carry around them steam gauges?

In the end, it all boils down to which toy your wife and your wallet will let you buy.

I don't fly enough IFR to keep current without 'forcing' the approaches, so I don't feel comfortable with a lot of instrumentation I really don't understand. For me, the simpler the better. For someone who has the need and the money for the fancy stuff, more power to you.
