Hoping to purchase a set of original wheel pants (and backing plates) for an original straight tail 172.

My2cents, don‘t buy original ones. The old plastics is a pita and will be brittle. Modern materials PMA parts are way better.

Straight tails had fiberglass pants.

Finding these old school ones takes a lot of time. I've done it for my 150 and my 172. I have usually had to piece them together. There are backing plates that turn up on ebay fairly often.

I have a set that need work (quite a bit actually) - but I think the costs of shipping to Australia would be prohibitive.

That really surprises me. I know the new ones have fiberglass, but I was of the impression there only was one switch in history. Why would they switch back and forth? When I was looking for wheel pants the only option were to go used PVC originals. Now with new regulations there are rumors of PMA'ed fiberglass replacements.

I believe the switch was in the early 60's (pointed style). The original teardrop type were fiberglass. On my 150 I actually found a NOS LH pant. Still had the Cessna PN printed inside. My 172 pants (of which I have a few sets) are also fiberglass.

The pre 1963 IPC does have a listing as "Fairing assy - fiberglass" and the original equipment form from the factory lists the speed fairings as 17 lbs....I don't think plastic ones weigh 17 lbs! I suspect they made the change for weight savings as the originals were actually fiberglass mat which is much thicker than the weave cloth. In fact - I was surprised to hear guys talking about "plastic" wheelpants.......I mean - who would do that????

If you want 74 style - here they are in fiberglass...

I have some pics here of one of them - the others are similar. Only this one has a crack - but it is still solid. So in all - a little glass work, but as you can see from the pics - the surface would require a ton of sanding to get smooth.
