I am part of a club with an oil quick drain. I noticed our maintenance guy keeps the oil quick drain hose on all the time. The other day I noticed oil on the floor and removed the top cowl to find oil dripping from the quick drain hose. After cleaning things up, it appears there may have been some residual oil still dripping from the hose after a recent oil change.

I just want some input on keeping the hose on or not.

Is the hose clamped on?

I take the hose off in between oil changes myself.
FWIW

The hose does not have a clamp

I take the hose off. I never thought of leaving it on all of the time.

I would not feel comfortable with the hose hanging, especially with no clamp to hold it in position. What if the hose get's pushed up somehow and then the drain would open.

i take mine off after changing personally. Not sure I would be a fan of a lose hose hanging on. By the way, what size hose do all of you use for the quick drain for an o-300? Mine is slightly too big but works of course, but it can slide off if I am not watching it carefully.

I can't never remember if it is 1/2" or 5/8" ID. I use regular coolant hose that is used on cars and trucks. I will check it out. It might depend on which quick drain you are using? Mine fit's snug, it holds up on it's own and I let drain for just a few minutes hot.

OT a little. I do a lot of oil changes at work on big trucks and little trucks. I don't stop and do other stuff waiting for the oil to drain. Couple minutes draining and I put the plug in, install filter and refill.

Because 30 years ago I drained a large air compressor of it's oil and went home to eat dinner while it drained. Went back to work thinking about a tire I had to change before the next morning and forgot I was in the middle of oil change. Turned on the compressor and a few minutes later heard the squeal of death from my air compressor. So I am very paranoid when a crankcase is empty of oil. Especially my plane!!

Thanks Challenger...I use a clearish colored tube I got from Lowes so I could see the oil draining out. Originally I tried an old water hose and it didnt fit so bought this one, but it is just slightly too big. I like that I can see the oil coming through, but not that I have to baby sit it.

You mean wrap a tie wrap around the groove to make sure it can't be pushed up and accidentally opened up?

No I don't but it sounds like a good idea.
