I recently purchased this 1979 172N with Air Plains 180 hp conversion, original paint and interior. Great flying aircraft.

Here's a quick rundown on what is currently installed.

Rosen Visors
Tanis TAS-100 Engine Heater
Garmin GMA-340 Audio Panel with 4-place intercom system
Cessna RT-385A 720 channel digital Nav/Com #1
Cessna ILS/VOR/LOC Nav indicator #1
Cessna RT-385A 720 channel digital Nav/Com #2
Cessna VOR/LOC nav indicator #2
Cessna R-546E ADF
King KT-76A Transponder with altitude encoder
S-TEC System 50 Autopilot with heading bug and Altitude Hold

I'll have a Garmin 430W installed very soon and thinking about the Aspen EFD1000 Pro or Garmin G500 along with a new panel. The ADF will most likely come out as well as one of the Nav/Com after the 430W is installed.

Be sure to add a GPSS when you install the 430W, then your autopilot will be able to track your GPS, including RNAV approaches. We also have an S-TEC 50 with altitude hold (came with the airplane, as did the 180 hp conversion), and last year we added a 430W and GPSS. What a sweet combination! The only thing it won't do is climb or descend to an altitude or capture and track a glide slope or LPV glide path, but those are easily hand flown with "George" capable of doing the rest.

Thanks for the advice John. Adding either the Aspen or Garmin PFD/MFD will give me the GPSS roll steering.

I must have missed these pics somehow.

Ours is a 180 Penn Yann and it does fly nicely as well.

That looks like the original paint, is that right? I do like the wingtip detail.
It's unusual to get the left retractable legs fitted as standard.Nikes or Adidas?

You have a good eye for detail... Nikes. ;-)

Yes, that is the original paint. It is a little rough in a few spots and I'll save up for a paint job to be done in 2-3 years.

They still look good if you don't look too close! Our '77 is still original as well, and we've been "saving up" for paint for awhile (the 430W and audio panel upgrade took care of those funds last year, so starting over now grin).

I just put 9478E in the shop for a panel face lift. I'll post pictures in a few weeks of the new Garmin G500 based panel.

Make sure you remove that insulation attached to the dash. Its a breeding ground for corrosion. My 172 was covered with surface corrosion under all that insulation.

Looking forward to seeing your completed job. Here are a few pix from our 2010 upgrade (no Aspen though), including before and after.

Very nice! What are you doing with all the empty realestate on the co-pilot's panel?

Here are some fresh pictures of the upgrade project progress.

That "real estate" is where the ADF (removed) and transponder (relocated to center panel) used to reside. No plans for it as yet, though we are considering installation of a fuel flow gauge, though it wouldn't be on the co-pilot's panel.

Hopefully the upgrade won't take too much longer. Had to order a new plastic lower pedestal piece as the old one just fell apart when removed.

Panel isn't painted yet in this picture but it will be tan. This picture is a little fuzzy because lighting wasn't good in the shop for picture but you get an idea of how it will look.

The panel upgrade project is complete! This turned out much better than I imagined. I have yet to fly it but will this weekend weather permitting.
