Donna and I flew up to Callaway Gardens today and at 4500 ft we were getting ground speeds ranging from 153 kts to 156 kts. Donna had the iPad and I think she may have taken a screen shot. Will post a screen shot and then send it in if it is good we may only have a shot of one less than 155 kts.

It was a great day for flying, pictures when we get home.

Pretty much, started at 10,000. smile

Here is one other screen shot well south of Dothan near MAI just as I began to level out from my climb. I was climbing with 24 inches and 2450 rpm and my ground speed was over 140kts in climb.

I lost 256 feet in the distance between MAI and Dothan. it was pretty bumpy at 4500 (lots of potholes) and we were on our way up to 5500 which was the correct altitude for our course heading. We finally got to and smooth air at 5,500 but my GS dropped off as we got higher and further North.

I continued to run 24inches and 2400 rpm in cruise and that normally produces near 125 kts.

Crazy winds up here around Fort Mcmurray last Tuesday. Had my fast ground speed ever of 157kts at 2200 - 2000 rpm in decent trying to slow down in anticipation to enter the pattern. Not sure what the speed would have been if i stayed in cruise, but i was in the control zone and couldn't play around trying to put a sticky note on my gps and take pictures. From Vegreville to CYMM it took me 1.2 hours averaging 148kts groundspeed, glad i wasn't going the other direction!

Here is the final pic I just sent to CD and it is 155 kts taken up around Dothan. It was really rough that day and difficult to maintain altitude at +/- 200 feet. Wildest ride I have had in a while both turbulence and GS. smile

The first pic was down around MAI leveling out from climb at 4521 feet and the second up around Dothan in "level" flight at 4,377 feet. The GS was bumping around from 150 kts to a high of 156 kts.

This matches my all time personal best record in my C-180 back several years ago on a flight from Huntsvile to PFN and 155 kts.

Since I have no wing struts CD is putting me in a class with other oddball aircraft. smile

I might be able to hit 155 with a 30 knot tailwind in a dive

Then go for it and send in an entry. The objective here is to make sure you enter, not necessarily to win.

OK CD, I will be flying Thursday and will see what I can get out of the old girl. I tried a pic last time but it came out real blurry. LOL, I guess I was flying closer to the speed of light then I thought

How about how slow at cruise 2350? Yesterday I had 62 knots at 1500' 2350 rpm returning to home apt.

We who fly in the Western Rockies area of the US chuckle when we see you all flying at 4,377 ft. My home airport elevation is 4,497. On a cross country flight last Saturday (and dang, I should have taken a picture of my GS which was only 133 kts max)I was flying at 10,500 and 11,500 for most of the flight to clear terrain around me.

I have a couple of those I can share as well. I always seem to have a headwind everywhere I go. At least the Cardinal is not as bad as my O-1, like my IA used to say it had a built in headwind. smile I saw 55 and 65 knots many times on that aircraft with a normal cruise speed of 85 to 90 kts.

Makes it tough when you see cars passing you on the interstate, however they aren't having as much fun as flying.

An embarrassing story that you reminded me of. My other half and I are based out of RHV in Northern California. All of 135' MSL field elevation. We flew out to Denver this summer and discovered the hard way all ATIS/ASOS/AWOS ceiling measurements are AGL, not MSL. I'm sure our CFI had told us about the correct reference before, but when you live and do most of your flying at sea level, AGL IS MSL.

Anyway, we were in Taos, New Mexico and using a cool little app called AeroWeather to get the ATIS at Denver International. The ceiling was reported as 3500'! WTF? how is the ceiling below field elevation? *Then* the light bulb came on.

As Bill Engval would say ... "Here's yer sign" smile

Hey, don't knock it. Beats the heck out of driving and is a lot faster than the C-150 that was our first aircraft ownership experience (CD can identify with that).

And we have seen 200 mph ground speed in our current 172, though that was before the ground speed contest was launched and before photo evidence was required. You can do wonders with a 55-60 kt tail wind. grin

I had a trip in a 172 years ago where I saw 140kts on the DME.
Recently in a 182 I got a ground speed of 200 mph (downhill) on the GPS from my car. It kept jumping from road to road tryingto figure out what was going on.

No Pictures though:(
