I saw a picture of a 1977 172N with the baggage comartment expanded. Is that standard on the N model, or would that have been some type of modifcation?I am having my interior redone in the fall and want to look in to the possibility of expanding it. I have an L model.

Anyone???

My 1982P looks like that, except it might go further back into the tail.

Was it built that way, and do you know of an STC that would cover this?

My 172n of 1978 looks like that except that the ELT was removed off the wall and relocated under the sub floor,a requirement of the 406 ELT mounting

Did you ever find out about an extended baggage compartment? I also have an "L", and would like to find an STC...

I had contacted Selkirk Aviation but even after talking with them I was uncertain what all was included. If you go to their website and look at what the package includes, you may think as I did that some of the sidewall components are not included. Let me know what you find out if you contact them.

I have a 172K and installed the Selkirk baggage extension.
It's super. Only got the floor, the bulkhead at the end of the extension and the lip for the front side. My A&P painted all including the interior fuselage. Looks great and it makes carrying baggage very roomy for light bulky items.
I got a weight and balance Excel spreadsheet from the Internet and use a scale. There's a 50 pound limit for the extension, but I don't know if that subtracts from the overall 120 pound limit for the original baggage area.
My 172K has a useful load of 915 pounds and it has 40 gallon total tanks. It's hard to hit gross weight. It's the CG I have to watch.
While the baggage extension increased the usefulness of my 172 immensely, it's only because of other power mods.

I have over a year flying every weekend with the Powerflow exhaust, RAM 160hp upgrade, repitched stock prop to 56" (I have a 172N prop with 57" pitch but went back to my 3" increase repitched stock prop for better climb - at 115 mph IAS I get 500 fpm), new carburetor, flap gap seals, and the baggage extension.

With the baggage extension and power mods, my 172K is "really wonderful", as compared to before where I was "very unhappy".

I cruise 145 mph TAS at 5500 ft, TSO EGT reads 1300 on the hottest cylinder, 1250 on the coolest, 320 deg on the CHT, at 2600 rpm with lots of throttle travel left.

Bruce, can you post pics? S the Selkirk kit does not have side walls as part of the kit?

It says right in the description that there aren't sidewalls included in the kit.

"(No fiberglass extended baggage side panels available for this kit.)"

Bob,

I thought I read that as well. The price is a little steep for what you get.

I'm located at KPUJ...if you are in the area feel free to stop in, we are usually there on the weekends...that is, after Aug 5 (Oshkosh and other travels).

You can just about count on it. I'm a low time pilot looking to fly anywhere and everywhere and make friends along the way. PM me with your contact info if you'd like and we could figure something out. (After Aug 5th isn't an issue for me. I'm still in Afghanistan waiting on a ride home.)
