Anyone use the iFly 720? I'd like to know what you think about this product. I saw one in person for the first time and it looked pretty cool. I'm going to be able to borrow it in a few weeks but was hoping to hear from someone with firsthand experience.

I love mine, but frankly haven't used it that much yet. I'm not all that thrilled with a yoke mount, I'd rather have it on the panel somewhere, but it won't fit with all my other gear, so I'm still pondering my options. But the unit itself is very nice. Real simple to learn and use. I don't use any external GPS antenna, and I can often get a position lock in my living room chair. Updates are simple, and cheaper than most anyone else. Haven't got to try the geo-referenced approach plates yet.

For what it cost I think I see an iPad mini and Foreflight in my future. I know this isn't what you're looking for but I'd thought I would chime in.

I've hot an ipad2 (love it and FF) and a garmin 696 w/XM...I'm looking for a nav/weather device I can panel mount (albeit with a docking station) without major overhaul of the "stack". The 720 is a candidate.

They just released the latest software update that let's you use the 720 in either portrait or landscape mode. I believe the docking station only fits a standard radio stack in portrait mode. The web site video shows one on a surface mount, not a docking station, mounted in landscape.

I just glanced at the iFly 720 on the internet and wondered why anyone would buy that when the iPad with Foreflight is less expensive. The iPad performance is superb.

Depends which IPad. I have 3g, Wi Fi and 64 G memory, so a little more $$$. The full FF subscription costs $150, not including addl hardware to get ADS-B weather. Also can't practically mount the IPad in the panel. With the new landscape view of IFly and the Gizmo docking station, you can essentially panel mount it.

Not making a case either way...I LOVE my IPad and FF, just looking for options to clean up the cockpit.

The main reason I prefer my iPad is that I can grab it and bring it close to me to better read the information on it. No amount of zooming would make it comfortable for me to read the small details of a sectional or IFR chart. My eyes are just not that good.

Well, when I was considering an Ipad, it was NOT less expensive. Most folks were recommending the external GPS, which along with FF Pro, totaled just as much as the Ifly.

Two, I was looking for a panel mounted unit, because I just prefer that. I have a panel mounted King GPS, that I thought was beginning to die. I checked repair prices, and found I could have bought both the Ipad and the Ifly for the price of a repair from King. Independant avionics shops can't do much work on them, the KMD-150 needs to go back to Bendix/King for repair. After a couple more flights, I discovered my issue was an operator induced database problem, which I have since corrected. Unit works just fine again, but now I have the Ifly, which is fine, because it is way, WAY cheaper and easier to update than the KMD-150.

Lastly, I picked the Ifly because the company is located not too far away, in McKinney, TX. If I ever have a problem, I can easily call and talk to a person who knows the unit and software intimately. I don't have to push 5-6 buttons, hold for 30 minutes, then listen to two techs hundreds of miles away argue that it's not a hardware issue, it's a software problem, and/or vice versa.

When it comes to the iPad's internal GPS, I'd certainly give it a try before I spend the money for an external GPS. Chances are it just won't be needed. We use iPads in our Falcon 900Bs and if our iPad can get a usable signal though our electrically heated, wire mesh impregnated glass side windows and windscreens they'll work on the typical plexiglass windows on light aircraft. We bought external GPSes for ours, but we don't even bother to bring them along anymore they're not necessary.

I've never seen the iFly unit, but an iPad with either ForeFlight or WingX (we got both installed) is a pretty tough act to follow.
